There are many different career paths you can take within business. If you want to hold a position that allows you to be involved in every aspect of a business and you have excellent problem solving and organizational skills, you should consider becoming a logistician.

Logisticians are some of the highest paid employees with a business degree and are responsible for overseeing the handling of all materials in a company. Their job is to coordinate and manage the distribution and movement of all products and materials a company has possession of. They study the life cycle of products, from their creation oversees to their shipping into the U.S. to their disposal, as well as other aspects of supply chain operations. They must pay close attention to timing of distribution and make sure their methods are efficient. When working on all these tasks, logisticians must also take into consideration the needs of its company’s customers and work with other departments in the company to achieve these needs. To get an idea of what successful logisticians do, you can look at what Wal-Mart does best. Their logisticians have developed a system that distributes their products worldwide quickly while still keeping prices as low as possible.

A logistician’s salary is higher than that of employees in many other areas of business, and they’re also expected to have some of the best job opportunities of any industry in the next several years. The job growth in the field will increase greatly between now and 2020.

So what kind of training is required to become a logistician? Those who want to work in the field are often required to have at least a bachelor’s degree in logistics or another closely related business field from one of the best schools for business. Some of the subjects you’ll study in a logistics degree program include logistics management, supply chain management, information systems, sourcing, and warehousing. During your time in school, it would also be helpful to complete an internship to help gain some real world experience.

Once you’ve completed a program from a good business school, you can choose to be certified by a professional organization that represents logisticians, including the International Society of Logistics. If you are certified by this or another organization, you’ll be required to take part in courses throughout your career to stay up to date on the latest happenings in the industry. Whether or not you obtain certification, most employers of logisticians that recently graduated will provide on-the-job training about the company’s policies and goals for their logistics system.
