The road is paved for the final 11.5 km (7.1 mi) to Highway 1 all other sections are gravel. It is provides access to hiking, horseback riding and hunting areas, Sibbald Lake Campground, private ranching operations and gas fields in the area. Through travellers can use it as an alternate route to Kananaskis Country.

Is Spray Lakes Road open?
Spray Lakes Road (Highway #742) will be closed from the Kananaskis Lakes Trail to Grassi Lakes Road due to avalanche hazard levels. The estimated time of re-opening is the afternoon of March 4th with low confidence.
Is the Kananaskis highway open?
Alberta Highway 40 is always closed for the winter from December to mid-June. The opening date is June 15. However, mind that the road can be also closed temporarily due to wildlife sightings or certain weather conditions. So check with the Kananaskis Country advisory.
