What is ectopic eruption?
Ectopic eruption is a disturbance in which the tooth does not follow its usual course. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide a brief review regarding the incidence, etiology, classification and different management techniques used for correcting ectopically erupting permanent first molar.
What does ectopic mean in dental?
Ectopic teeth are similar to impacted teeth. The difference is that ectopic teeth erupt somewhere they shouldn’t (referred to as an ‘abnormal eruption path’), whereas impacted teeth may be on course to erupt in the right spot, but are simply not able to. A tooth can be both ectopic and impacted.
What causes ectopic eruption?
An ectopic eruption can occur when the permanent molar has an altered path of eruption in a mesial angular direction. The permanent molar can erupt in a detrimental position, under the distal of the second primary molar, or impacted against the first permanent molar.
How is ectopic eruption treated?
The purposes of treatment of ectopic first molar are movement of the tooth distally to its normal position in occlusion and correction of the mesial angulation to regain space for normal eruption of the second premolar. Majority of cases with spontaneous self-correction occurs before the age of seven.
What is band and loop space maintainer?
The band and loop space maintainer is used in majority of patients requiring single tooth space maintenance in both primary and mixed dentitions. It preserves the proximal dimensions, but it is nonfunctional.
What is molar ectopic pregnancy?
Ectopic molar pregnancy is a rare condition, which can occur at any place in the pelvic cavity. Invasive mole and choriocarcinoma might even follow such a pregnancy.
How common are ectopic teeth?
The prevalence rate of ectopic eruption of FPMs has been reported to be between 0.75−6%.
What is crown and loop?
Crown and loop space maintainers can be used when a stainless steel crown is needed on a tooth which also is an abutment for a space maintainer. However, often band and loop space maintainers are used over stainless steel crowns.
What is a band and loop?
Band-and-loop maintainer is a temporary appliance that is worn over a period of time. Duration can range from 6 months up to 8 years, that’s why proper care must be considered. Recurring appointments with the dentist must be made to ensure these spacers’ stability as well as the oral hygiene that comes with it.
Why is it called a molar pregnancy?
The products of conception may or may not contain fetal tissue. It is characterized by the presence of a hydatidiform mole (or hydatid mole, mola hydatidosa). Molar pregnancies are categorized as partial moles or complete moles, with the word mole being used to denote simply a clump of growing tissue, or a growth.
What are ectopic eruptions?
Nikiforuk who also classified ectopic eruptions, defined them as “a condition in which the permanent teeth, because of deficiency of growth in the jaw or segment of jaw, assume a path of eruption that intercepts a primary tooth, causes its premature loss and produces a consequent malposition of the permanent tooth.[ 1]…
What is ectopic eruption of permanent molar?
The permanent molar can erupt in a detrimental position, under the distal of the second primary molar, or impacted against the first permanent molar. This ectopic eruption can adversely affect the tooth located anteriorly.
What are the causes of ectopic tooth eruption?
One of the earliest reports on ectopic eruption was by Chapman who, in 1923, described four cases of ectopic eruption of the maxillary first permanent molars in which he listed four possible causes: Small arches Deviant paths of eruption of the permanent molar Lack of forward movement of all primary teeth, and
What is ectopic eruption and dysplasia?
Dental dysplasia – An abnormality in the development of the teeth. (WAC 182-535A-0010) Ectopic eruption – A condition in which a tooth erupts in an abnormal position or is 50% blocked out of its normal alignment in the dental arch.
