Can you go into the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde?
In the summer, Wetherill Mesa is fully staffed and both cliff dwellings (Step House and Long House) are open. Step House is open for self-guided tours and Long House is open for ranger-guided tours.

Can I explore Mesa Verde without a tour?
Give yourself 1.5-2 hours to drive in and out of the park. Without taking a tour, plan on 3 hours to cover Spruce Tree, Mesa Top, and Cliff Palace Loops. Add an additional 1-1.5 hours to tour one of the cliff dwellings. Tours were not running during our visit so our visit time was 4 hours.

Can you go down to Mesa Verde?
To get there, you need to drive down from the beginning of the top of Chapin Mesa into the ravine between them, and back up again, so it is not quick. It is a narrow, winding road that is closed from October to May. Vehicles longer than 25 feet are not permitted on the road to Wetherill Mesa.
