How do you seal a differential drain plug?
Registered. I have found the best stuff to use is Permatex High Tack. Clean the plug with brake parts cleaner, then apply starting about 1/2 way from the end of the plug. It will set up fast, remain flexible, and seals well even with the diff cover threads still covered in oil.

We have never used any type of sealant on the rear diff plugs. You obviously kill it by over tightening them but if they aren’t tight enough they could “sweat” but it would have to be close to hand tight to really leak…

You don’t need nuttin. Ehh, you’ll have some seepage but by the time you see anything funny, it will be time for da next fluid change. Use some teflon tape and be done wit it if it ya really care. I would imagine the drain plug (lower one) would be more important to seal. Wanna make it kosher, use a small amount of RTV, blue, red, black or grey.
