Are lifeboats self righting?
In wild winds and stormy seas, volunteer crews depend on their lifeboats to keep them safe while out on a rescue – even if it turns upside down. Many lifeboats in the RNLI’s fleet can bring themselves the right way up if the powerful elements cause them to capsize.

These radically new lifeboats were 24 feet (7.3 m) in length and weighed 5,000 lb (2,300 kg). They had two enclosed cabins (one at each end) which could hold a total of 25 persons. The space in between was designed to help persons in the water be pulled aboard, and could be enclosed with a canvas top.

What makes the Severn class lifeboat unique?
The Severn class lifeboat features one of the first hard chine (angled) hull designs for the RNLI. She has the same geometric hull shape as our Trent class lifeboat and the low line of her hull makes recovering casualties much easier. As with all of our all-weather lifeboats, the Severn class is inherently self-righting.

When did Harwich station get its first Severn lifeboat?
Harwich was the first station to receive a Severn class lifeboat, the Albert Brown 17-03 in 1996. Margaret Joan and Fred Nye 17-46 was the last Severn to be built and entered our relief fleet in 2004. There are also nine Severn class lifeboats in our relief fleet.
