A chemise or shift is a classic smock, or a modern type of women’s undergarment or dress. Historically, a chemise was a simple garment worn next to the skin to protect clothing from sweat and body oils, the precursor to the modern shirts commonly worn in Western nations.

Origins of the Chemise The term chemise was first used to describe an outer garment in the 1780s, when Queen Marie Antoinette of France popularized a kind of informal, loose-fitting gown of sheer white cotton, resembling a chemise in both cut and material, which became known as the chemise à la reine.

The “chemise dress” designation usually refers to a loose, unfitted “round gown” (i.e. not open in front from neck to hem) that resembles a linen chemise, or shift (Figure 1), the centuries-old, near-universal underwear for Western women.

Despite the “barely-there” nature of the shameez, it was a garment that in its very delicacy was loaded with meaning.

A cotton vest or tight t-shirt work just as well as a proper corset liner for keeping a barrier between your corset and body. Specially made corset liners do have a few advantages however. They’re normally made with just the one or two seams to keep the surface against your skin as smooth as possible.
