Is Stellite steel?
Stellite is more difficult to machine and grind than steel, and hence requires high performance processing equipment and specialized machining tools. Due to its incredible toughness Stellite is often machined by grinding rather than cutting.
What is Stellite made from?
Stellite alloys are a range of cobalt-based alloys, with significant proportions of chromium (up to 33%) and tungsten (up to 18%). Some of the alloys also contain nickel or molybdenum.
Why are Stellite valves used?
Stellite was a major improvement in the production of poppet valves and valve seats for the valves, particularly exhaust valves, of internal combustion engines. By reducing their erosion from hot gases, the interval between maintenance and re-grinding of their seats was dramatically lengthened.
What is the difference between Stellite 6b and 6K?
Stellite™ 6K has similar properties to Stellite™ 6B, but is slightly harder and less ductile. Stellite™ 6K is excellent for cutting or scraping applications, such as knives or scraper blades. Stellite™ 6K is a custom-rolled material and can be produced to a gauge and sheet size uniquely suited to your application.
What are the properties of Stellite?
The Stellite alloys retain their properties at high temperatures where they also have excellent oxidation resistance. They are typically used in the temperature range 315 – 600° C (600 – 1112° F). They can be finished to exceptional levels of surface finish with a low coefficient of friction to give good sliding wear.
What are the different grades of Stellite?
Stellite™ alloys are available in many different grades (chemical compositions) and several different processes or methods of manufacture. For wrought grades Stellite™ 6B and Stellite™ 6K, the wrought or hot forging method of production leads to improvements of the resulting material with regards to:
