Is original music possible?
So if we can only write songs with 5 notes, 4 chords, 2 grooves, 2 structures, and 1 time signature how can any popular music be original? Well really, it can’t be. There is no such thing as 100% original music. This is an idea that people who don’t make art do not understand.

Music copyright designates legal ownership of a musical composition or sound recording. This ownership includes exclusive rights to redistribute and reproduce the work, as well as licensing rights that enable the copyright holder to earn royalties.
Is interpolating music legal?
However, if you are just doing an interpolation of a song, you only need to get permission from the owner of the underlying composition since you are just featuring the underlying composition — not the original recording — in your new song.
Is it hard to make an original song?
See, songwriting is hard. It takes time to get good. But the only way to get better is to write – to get plenty of practice. So if in doubt, just remember that in songwriting – or any kind of writing – to suck less, write more.
Will we ever run out of songs?
The short answer is yes, there’s a limited number of sounds we can hear and thus a finite number of possible ways of combining them. Don’t panic, though. Before you start stockpiling melodies and burying riffs in your garden, you should know that there’s still a lot of them left.
How many songs can exist?
For the first section I’ve discounted rhythm so as to focus only on the permutations of notes. All melodies should be contained within an octave — C to C’ inclusive. Any of the 13 chromatic notes of the octave can be used….Four to infinity.
