A stillbirth is the death of a baby in the womb after week 20 of the mother’s pregnancy. The reasons go unexplained for 1/3 of cases. The other 2/3 may be caused by problems with the placenta or umbilical cord, high blood pressure, infections, birth defects, or poor lifestyle choices.

Most babies born unexpectedly without a heartbeat can be successfully resuscitated in the delivery room. Of those successfully resuscitated, 48% survive with normal outcome or mild-moderate disability.

A “macerated” fetus shows skin and soft-tissue changes (skin discoloration or darkening, redness, peeling, and breakdown) suggesting death was well before delivery (prepartum) [1,10]. A “fresh” fetus lacks such skin changes and is presumed to have died much more recently (intrapartum).

Is it possible to have a normal pregnancy after a stillbirth?

Yes. Most women who deliver stillborn babies go on to have normal pregnancies and births. If the stillbirth was caused by a birth defect or umbilical cord problem, the chances of another stillbirth is slight. If the cause was an illness the mother has or a genetic disorder, the risk is somewhat higher.
