How do you adjust the float height on a Mikuni carb?
Float height is maintained by a little, adjustable tab on the float arm. It doesn’t take much for that tab to be moved, which immediately changes the level of fuel in the float bowl. That tab can be relocated when disassembling the carb, or with rough handling of the float or float arm.
How do you measure carb float height?
With the chamber removed, tip the carb onto its side, in the same position it takes while fitted to the bike. Now blow into the fuel supply pipe, while simultaneously lifting the floats slowly until the air flow stops. This is the measuring point for the specified float height.
What happens if carb float is too low?
A low float level will create fuel starvation, which will cause the engine to stumble. The fuel level in the carburetor is also important. Some of the most common symptoms of improperly adjusted or sticky floats are hesitation on acceleration, a rough idle, flooding and misfires.
How do I adjust the float on my ATV carburetor?
Hold the carburetor sideways at a 90 degree angle with the float pointing downward from its hinging or pivot point so it moves freely when the carburetor is tilted gently from side to side. Tilt the carburetor upward till the float stops moving, or “seats.” Check the float height using the float gauge.
Are the floats on a new Mikuni carb set to factory specifications?
When a new Mikuni carb leaves the factory, the floats are almost always set to factory specifications. Working for a Mikuni distributor, I’ve had the opportunity to open up and examine hundreds of brand new, fresh-out-of-the-box carbs. It is extremely rare to find a new carb not set to factory specs (or close enough to work just fine).
