What happened to the Barings Bank?
Barings Banks was a British merchant bank that collapsed in 1995 after one of its traders, 28-year-old Nick Leeson operating in its Singapore office, lost $1.3 billion in unauthorized trades. Barings was one of England’s oldest merchant banks and at one point, even Queen Elizabeth II had an account with it.
What happened to the Barings family?
Most of the estates were long gone by the time the final crash of Barings Bank in 1995 claimed the bank’s longtime headquarters at 8 Bishopsgate. Baring Brothers & Co. Henry’s son Evelyn (1841–1917) became the 1st Earl of Cromer. Cromer Hall is still a private residence, but not in the Baring family.

Nick Leeson was Barings Bank’s star trader on the Singapore International Monetary Exchage (SIMEX). He regularly reported huge profits. In truth though, he was gambling with the bank’s money, eventually racking up an astonishing £832 million of losses.

Leeson was appointed commercial manager of Galway United F.C. in April 2005, rising to the position of general manager in November 2005. By July 2007 he had become the club’s chief executive officer. In February 2011, after the club encountered financial problems, he resigned his position.
