What is mucinous material?
The major distinguishing features of mucinous tumors are that the tumors are filled with a mucus-like material, which gives them their name; this mucus is produced by mucus-secreting goblet cells very similar to the cells lining normal intestine.
Can a mucinous cystadenoma rupture?
Ruptured mucinous cystadenoma (MCA) is extremely rare, and very few studies have followed up patients over the long term after ruptured MCA. We report a case of ruptured MCA of the pancreas with recurrence-free survival for 8 years.
What are Mucinous cystadenomas?
Mucinous cystadenomas are usually seen as large multilocular cysts containing fluid of various viscosity. Due to this reason, the loculi of the tumors often show variable signal intensities on both T1 and T2 sequences.
What is the difference between cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma?
Radiologically, cystadenomas and cystadenocarcinomas appear similar on ultrasound and CT. Both reveal multilocular, septated cystic lesions. The differentiation between cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma requires histologic examination. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult, as needle aspiration carries the risk of peritoneal seeding of tumor.
What is the prognosis of mucinous cystadenoma of the ovary?
A mucinous cystadenoma is benign with excellent prognosis (c.f. borderline mucinous tumours of the ovary or mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary). Nonetheless, they are frequently surgically excised for histological confirmation of benignity, and due to mass effect of the large tumours.
What does a mucinous cyst look like on MRI?
MRI Mucinous cystadenomas are usually seen as large multilocular cysts containing fluid of various viscosity. Due to this reason, the loculi of the tumors often show variable signal intensities on both T1 and T2 sequences. This can sometimes give a “stained glass” appearance.
