What is GLX Boston?
The Green Line Extension (GLX) is a construction project to extend the light rail Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line northwest into Somerville and Medford, two inner suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. The project is opening in two phases in 2022 at a total cost of $2.28 billion.
Where is the new Green Line in Somerville?
Union Square
The Green Line Extension (GLX) will extend the northern end of the Green Line from Lechmere to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford. GLX will provide service in areas that historically did not have access to fast and reliable public transit.
Where is the new Lechmere station?
Lechmere Station will be relocated to the north side of Monsignor O’Brien Highway in order to align the station will the remainder of the Green Line Extension. The new station will have two Headhouses, with one entrance at North First Street (Cambridge Crossing Street Network), and one entrance at East St.

What happened to Lechmere?
The surface station was closed on May 24, 2020 for Green Line Extension construction; the busways at the old station remained open as a transfer point between MBTA bus routes and Lechmere–North Station shuttle buses until the new station opened….Lechmere station.

Who is GLX Constructors?
GLX Constructors is a fully integrated construction joint venture comprising Fluor Enterprises, Inc. (Fluor), The Middlesex Corporation (Middlesex), Herzog Contracting Corp. (Herzog), and Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. (Balfour Beatty), in association with our lead designer, STV Incorporated (STV).
Where is the GLX located?
The GLX is primarily located in Somerville, northwest of downtown Boston, with its northernmost portion in Medford and its southernmost portion in the East Cambridge section of Cambridge.
What work is being done at GLX?
This work includes test trains (without passengers) running on the track between the Vehicle Maintenance Facility, Lechmere Station, and Union Square Station. This is a major milestone for the project and brings GLX one step closer to revenue service. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, with frequent weekends.
Does the GLX have any grade crossings?
The GLX is fully grade separated, with no road grade crossings, though there are level crossings for passengers at East Somerville and Ball Square stations.
