Yep, it was a design decision by KSP’s creator, Felipe (HarvesteR, now moved on), to have a 1/10 scale solar system so it would be simpler and easier for rocketry newcomers. The delta-V requirements are so much less, and fuel tanks and engines don’t have to have realistic specifications.

Where are KSP mods stored?
If you’ve downloaded the game on Steam and can’t find the file folder, right-click the game in your Steam library, select Properties > Local Files > Browse. In your KSP folder, open the GameData folder. Drag the mod file folder to the GameData folder. That’s all there is to it.
