AUDDIS stands for ‘Automated Direct Debit Instruction Service’ and was brought in to help reduce the time, paperwork and effort in setting up Direct Debit Instructions. AUDDIS is the Bacs service that enables your organisation to set up new Direct Debit Instructions (DDI) at your customers’ bank electronically.
What is Auddis and Addacs?
AUDDIS, ADDACS and ARUDD ADDACS stands for Automated Direct Debit Amendment and Cancellation Service and ARUDD stands for Automated Return of Unpaid Direct Debit. Between them, they cover the three key actions related to direct debits namely set-up, amendment and failure.
What is an Auddis originator?
The originator keeps the original signed instruction and electronically sends the details to the customers’ PSP to validate and, if accepted, set up the instruction on its database. Before AUDDIS, anyone who wanted to pay by Direct Debit had to sign a physical paper instruction and post it to their bank.
How do I become Auddis compliant?
Signing up is a straightforward four step process:
- Complete and submit an AUDDIS application form.
- Prepare your systems, including software, to accept the new submission and message format.

Paper (or non-AUDDIS) lodgement – The customer posts the paper Direct Debit Instruction to your organisation. – You record the DDI information on your own systems and post the paper DDI on to the customer’s bank for processing.

Allows the Service User to identify invalid account information, as well as any unpaid Direct Debits, for easier reconciliation of successful payments. Reduces the time between lodgement, when the bank receives and accepts the DDI, and the collection of the first payment.
Is Direct Debit Bacs?
There are two main types of Bacs payment; Direct Debit, where one party has been given permission to pull money from the bank account of another party, and Direct Credit, where a party deposits the money in the other party’s account.
What does instruction Cancelled refer to payer mean?
Instruction cancelled – Refer to payer. Paying PSP has cancelled Instruction. Service user cannot collect via Direct Debit on this account. If Direct Debit is to continue the service user must obtain a new DDI for a new account.

What are the timescales for acting on an Addacs report?
Action on the information contained in ADDACS advices must be taken within 3 working days of the advice being made available, however it is strongly recommended that changes are applied immediately.
What must all Paperless Direct Debit service users have?
Getting started You must have live AUDDIS status before using the Paperless Direct Debit service and must have completed an AUDDIS and Paperless Direct Debit or a joint AUDDIS and Paperless Direct Debit application form issued by your bank.
