Abstract. Statins are competitive inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol biosynthesis. Statins are widely and successfully used for lowering plasma cholesterol levels causing up to 45% reduction of plasma cholesterol and considerable reduction in risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Can statins cause polymyositis?
Polymyositis is a rare side effect of statin therapy that is characterized by symmetric proximal muscle weakness and the persistence of symptoms even after discontinuation of the drug.
What are statin contraindications?
Statins are contraindicated for use by patients with active hepatic disease or unexplained persistent elevations in aminotransferase levels. Statins are contraindicated during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because of the effects on the cholesterol pathway.
Do statins cause mitochondrial dysfunction?
Emerging evidence suggest that statins impair mitochondria, which is demonstrated by abnormal mitochondrial morphology, decreased oxidative phosphorylation capacity and yield, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and activation of intrinsic apoptotic pathway.
Can statins trigger an autoimmune disease?
Although statins are generally considered safe, recent data from long-term follow-up on patients who are on statins for long duration suggest that prolonged exposure to statins may trigger autoimmune reactions.
What blood tests check for statin damage?
Your doctor will carry out a blood test to measure a substance in your blood called creatine kinase (CK), which is released into the blood when your muscles are inflamed or damaged. If the level of CK in your blood is more than 5 times the normal level, your doctor may advise you to stop taking the statin.
What are 3 contraindications of statins?

Do statins weaken the immune system?
In addition to reducing cholesterol, statins also lower levels of inflammation in the body. Reducing inflammation probably helps statins to prevent heart attack and stroke. However, evidence is emerging that these statin effects may also have a downside, hindering the ability of the immune system to fight infections.
Do statins destroy muscle?
MYTH: Statins destroy muscle tissue. “Most studies show that very few patients actually stop taking statins due to side effects. It’s extraordinarily rare to get a more serious condition of muscle breakdown called rhabdomyolysis.”

What is the colon for in C++?
It’s called an initialization list. It initializes members before the body of the constructor executes.
What is the main purpose of constructor?
The purpose of constructor is to initialize the object of a class while the purpose of a method is to perform a task by executing java code. Constructors cannot be abstract, final, static and synchronised while methods can be. Constructors do not have return types while methods do.
Why do we need constructor?
We use constructors to initialize the object with the default or initial state. The default values for primitives may not be what are you looking for. Another reason to use constructor is that it informs about dependencies.
What does CTOR stand for in programming?
It stands for “creator” or “constructor”.
What is * this pointer in C++?
Advertisements. Every object in C++ has access to its own address through an important pointer called this pointer. The this pointer is an implicit parameter to all member functions. Therefore, inside a member function, this may be used to refer to the invoking object.
What is object initialization?
An object initializer is an expression that describes the initialization of an Object . Objects consist of properties, which are used to describe an object. The values of object properties can either contain primitive data types or other objects.
How do you initialize an object?
