What does a diffuser do on a race car?

The diffuser acts as an expansion chamber to manage the air as it exits from underneath the car and reintegrates it with higher-pressure ambient air. Smoothing this transition reduces turbulence and drag in the car’s wake and improves airflow under the car.

How does a diffuser create downforce?

The diffuser itself accelerates the flow in front of it, which helps generate downforce. This is achieved by creating a change in velocity of the air flowing under the diffuser by giving it a rake angle which in turn generates a change in pressure and hence increases downforce.

How do diffusers impact with a lift of a car?

The diffuser in cars ensures that the air passing under the vehicle travels faster than the air passing above it, which creates a difference in the level of pressure. As a result, the air above presses down on the vehicle, which is known as ‘down-force’ – the key reason why cars with diffusers have a better grip.

With this in mind, the role of the diffuser on a racing car is to speed the airflow up underneath the car, reducing its pressure, creating a greater difference in pressure between the upper and lower surfaces of the car. This means more downforce and aerodyamic grip, allowing the car to corner faster.

Can you design your own air diffuser curves?

You can design your own as well but take care to ensure proper attachment of airflow to the diffuser curve. Being overly aggressive can cause airflow separation, reducing downforce and increasing drag. It’s wise to also protect your splitter from damage if and when it touches the ground.

What determines the exit angle of a rear diffuser?

About the exit angle of the diffuser; the overall behaviour of a diffuser is strongly influenced by the entire car body and, in particular for the exit, by the position, type and angle of attack of the main rear wing. I haven’t had a chance to get back to the diffuser yet.
