The Italian Military did very poorly in WW2. Several of their modern, expensive ships were sunk, they fared poorly in Africa, they had to be bailed out by Hitler in Greece, and their units sent to help Germany on the Russian Front were wiped out. After losing Sicily to the Allies, it was obvious that Mussolini was a total failure.
