Did a man or woman start the Miss America pageant?

QUESTION
Did a man or woman start the Miss America pageant?
What was his name and reason for starting?
Im doing an argumentative essay on beauty pageants

ANSWER
In1921, a unique American tradition began as a promotional gimmick when Atlantic City hotelmen decide to stage a flashy fall festival, or “pageant”to entice summer tourists to stay in town past Labor Day. The fall festival includes a “National Beauty Tournament” on the beach to select “the most beautiful bathing beauty in America”. Local newsman, Herb Test, added the crowning touch when he exclaimed, “Let’s call her ‘Miss America!'”

“Miss America represents the highest ideals. She is a real combination of beauty, grace, and intelligence, artistic and refined. She is a type which the American Girl might well emulate.”

Those words were spoken by Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce President Frederick Hickman.

So I guess the answer to your question has to be ‘men’ and perhaps the Chamber of Commerce President could be the closest person to an ‘inventer’ since that organization would be most interested in sponsoring the original aim of the pageant – to keep tourists around past Labor Day.
