Format of AP Language and Composition free response rhetoric analysis?
Anyone whos taken the exam and gotten 9’s or is in AP Lang please answer:
Now, my AP Lang teacher tells us that our thesis for the rhetoric analysis piece for the AP Lang exam should examine three different elements of rhetoric used in the writing (i.e. anaphora, strong diction, and a common appeal to the audience).
Now, do you suggest doing what my teacher told me, or rather examine 1 or 2 elements that are prominent throughout. I was reading a few free response essays from previous exams and the ones that got 9’s focused on 1 or 2 elements rather than 3 different isolated ones.
I took AP Lang as a sophomore and scored a 5 on the AP test. I used three different examples, however I believe my score was mainly the result of how amazing my synthesis essay was. I think that they probably gave me about 18/9 on that essay. 😉 Anyways, using only two would be fine if you were super detailed and maybe connected them somehow? As for using only one, I wouldn’t recommend it. You’d have to write a super analytical, detailed essay that I think any high schooler would be incapable of doing very successfully.
