Help with satire paper?

QUESTION
Help with satire paper?
We just finished reading Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” in AP Lang. Now we have to write satire conveying our opinion about a particular government, social, or political position. We should not directly mention our opinion; rather, we have to emphasize the absurdity of an opposing position. I was thinking of writing something about obesity in America, but I have no idea where/how to start…or even write satire, for that matter.

ANSWER
You are meant to write with humour and wit. Pure humour alone wouldn’t cut it nor would pure wit.

“Satire should, like a polished razor keen,
Wound with a touch, that’s scarcely felt or seen.”

There is plenty of scope for humour in the treatment of the subject of obesity, but injecting a dash of wit into it, which is what is required to elevate your effort into satire, is not so easy and requires thought. I’ll try to set the tone for your essay by a few opening words, but clearly I’ll have to leave it to you to take it from there: “In our land of plenty and opportunity everyone has enough of the good things in life, and if happiness may be measured in kilograms weight per citizen, our people are easily the happiest of all humanity on the planet.”
