how can i practice to write better essays?

QUESTION
how can i practice to write better essays?
I’m a poor writer and I know it for a fact. I have poor structure and sometimes I just write because I have to write a 5 paragraph essay in highschool. half way through the essay I start writing random things because I don’t know what to write about. What can I do to improve my writing skills so when I enter college I don’t fail everything

ANSWER
The fundamentals of essay writing are brainstorming, research, and outlining. First, consider the topic and write down everything that comes to mind. Then, whatever you’re still curious or need to know more about, research through credible, college appropriate sources (and write them down for your works cited/references pages). Once you feel like you have enough information based on your topic, organize it all into a paragraph oriented outline. Staying on topic when you actually sit down to write your essay should be much easier if you’ve already planned everything you want to say.

As far as improving sentence structure, the only thing I can advise you to do is read more. Good writers have to be good readers first. Most colleges also have tutors available who can proofread your papers for you.
