How do I write a scholarship essay?

QUESTION
How do I write a scholarship essay?
I am trying to get a scholarship to my Catholic high school for my senior year. I have to write a 350-500 word essay on why I feel I should be awarded this scholarship. I have no idea where to star or what to say. Please help me!

ANSWER
This is a pretty short essay, but basically, here’s what you should cover:

1) Why you have a financial need for the scholarship (make this part short and to the point)
2) How you feel you have benefitted from a Catholic education during the past 3 years.
3) How you have contributed to the school in the past 3 years and how you will continue to contribute during your senior year and beyond.

Start with an anecdote: perhaps how nervous you were on the first day of school back when you were a freshman, how unsure you were that this was the best place for you. Then tell them something about how you found yourself in a warm and welcoming community, and how you have blossomed as you became involved in………whatever activities you have been involved in. End by telling them how much learning from a Catholic perspective has shaped your values, and how you hope to take those values with you to make the world a better place.

They’re not expecting the great American novel–they just want you to let them know how much you appreciate their help. If you don’t lay it on TOO thick, that should do it.
