How do you write a comparative essay for AS English Literature?

QUESTION
How do you write a comparative essay for AS English Literature?
I have coursework due in a few eeks for English Lit.
My question is loosely
“How does George Orwell’s 1984 and Margaret Atwood’s A Handmaid’s Tale show how totalitarian regimes assert control the individual?”

Basically, I have idea for each but I have no idea how to set out this essay and how to write it. Is there some kind of formula to writing them?

I’m so confused 🙁

Any help would be absolutely great.

ANSWER
1. read the books.
2. think of how you would answer that question for each individual book including specific examples and quotes.
3. see if there are any major similarities or differences in the way the authors present the same idea of totalitarian control.
4. Write a thesis statement that summarizes step 3
5. Write the required number of paragraphs/pages by giving specific examples that relate to your thesis.

There is very little outside research to do, but if you do get stuck you can check your library for some literary commentaries for each title, but you would still have to synthesize the information on your own.
