How many questions are there on the SAT?
I’m nervous and want to know how to pace myself on the test…
10 sections, but only 9 count. You never know which is the one that doesn’t count except that its format is a duplicate of another section. So I’ll go through each section sort of:
Essay – 25 minutes
Math: 3 sections total (Two 25 minute sections, and one 20 minute section). One 25 minute section has 20 multiple choice questions, while the other has 8 multiple choice questions and 10 answers that you have to come up with on your own (plug-ins). The 20 minute section is always section 8 or 9 and has 16 multiple choice questions.
Reading: 3 sections total (Two 25 minute sections, and one 20 minute section). One 25 minute section has 5 sentence completions (vocabulary questions), 4 short passage questions and 15 long passage reading questions (divided into 2 passages). The other 25 minute section has 8 sentence completions, 4 short passage questions and 7 long passage readings (either 1 long passage or 2 medium passages). The 20 minute section is always section 8 or 9 and has 6 sentence completions and 13 long reading passage questions (either 1 long passage or 2 medium passages).
Writing multiple choice: Two sections total (One 25 minutes and one is 10 minutes). The 25 minute section has 11 sentence correction questions, 18 error ID questions and 6 paragraph correction questions. The 10 minute section is ALWAYS section 10 and has 14 sentence correction questions.
You have to sort of look at that and determine your own pace. In general, the SAT isn’t very time constricting the way the ACT is. Take a few practice tests and time yourself and give yourself 3 minutes less than the amount of time allowed. Get used to that because you will have some cushion if you can’t do it as quickly on the actual exam and if you do it in equal time, you have time to check over. Good luck! I got 2120 first time on SAT if you want this to seem valid, but more recently I have gotten 2250+ on practice tests.
