QUESTION
How many words is a 500-word essay really? Exactly 500, more, less?
I am supposed to write a 500-word essay. How long should it be really? Does it have to be exactly 500? More? Less? 450-550? Don’t just say 500 unless you give an explanation!

ANSWER
Hello there 🙂

No, there are no such hard and fast rules regarding words, but that does not mean you do not comply with the limit. Usually the margin is +10 -10 words, meaning, your essay can ideally range from 490 to 510 words, I would say you can go maximum 515 words and minimum 490.

A good way to do this is to start counting your words in an average line, for example, I know that on a normal page, my average line has 8 words, so when I write 10 lines its 80 words roughly, hence I can plan my words accordingly. I hope this helps 🙂

Oh and btw, if you are wondering why you can not write more than 500, more is good right? It is because the more you write above the word limit, it shows how you do not have the capability to follow rules and the capacity to fit the material as required.

Do good, be good.
