How to start an appeal college essay?

QUESTION
How to start an appeal college essay?
I was conditionally accepted to the new england institute of art and I just found out that I wasn’t accepted because of my GPA. I now have to write an essay to appeal it.. any ideas how I should start it?

ANSWER
Tough luck with the conditional acceptance. Now you have a chance to show your stuff. It is difficult to answer you question in detail with the little information you provided. For example, your approach might be different if you have been out of school for awhile as opposed to being a recent grad.

Here are some general tips:
1. Write then rewrite, rewrite, rewrite.
Have at least one other person who REALLY knows their stuff critique your work. What you say will probably be less important than how you say it. They will be looking at your grammar, spelling and ability to organize and present your thoughts in a logical manner. This may be the most important essay you will ever write, so take your time and get it right.

2. Focus on the positive.
Admit you weaknesses but stress your strengths. Provide explanations, where necessary, but NO EXCUSES. For example, were there certain events happening in your life that impacted your grade? If so, what did you learn from them? Were there certain classes that gave you particular trouble and brought your overall average down? Maybe as an artist you had difficulty with left-brain stuff like math.

3. Provide evidence.
Have you done any work, even volunteering, that indicates your ability inspite of your GPA? Be sure to provide strong references. NOT friends, parents, etc.

4. Research.
Check out the links below for more info. Obviously, the most essential info will come from the college to which you are applying.
