How to write better essays?

QUESTION
How to write better essays?
I’m always getting bad grades for my essays . . .

ANSWER
Write an outline

I. Introduction
a. Grabber (Something that “grabs” your reader’s attention. Something that sounds interesting.)
b. Use a ZOOM format, meaning you start broad and narrow down to your thesis.
c. Thesis Statement (A fact + an opinion = a thesis. A thesis should cover everything in your essay)

II. Main Idea 1
a. Topic Sentence (kind of like a mini-thesis, but just for this paragraph)
b. Proof (This could be a fact, a quote, ect. to prove your point)
c. Counter-point. (“Some people may say this is not true, but really it is because…” Provide a counter-point, and then prove the counter-point wrong. You don’t have to do this every time, just once or twice in your essay)

III. Main Idea 2

IV. Main Idea 3

V. Conclusion
a. sum up each of your main ideas, and end leaving the reader with a final thought.

Have someone revise your essay afterward, like a parent, peer, or older sibling. Don’t forget to use spell-check, it makes you look more sophisticated when you spell words right. Take out “simple” words (such as “good” or “bad”) and exchange them for refined words. Use a Thesaurus for this. Check for grammar, contractions, or awkward sentences. If you’re typing, don’t use some strange font or weird color. Always use Times font, size twelve, and black. Center the title and your name.
