ANSWER
You need a good essay and some inciteful recommendations. Then if you can, go and VISIT the schools most interesting to you. It means the world …go meet the advisor and see if they can have you meet with a department undergraduate advisor. For example, if you like History, see if you can meet with the undergraduate history advisor. So then when you write your essay you can honestly say that when you met with so and so on such and such a date you were impressed with such and such at the school and since that time you have thought about this that and the other things you see for your future and then explain why this school is so appropriate for your hopes.

Now here’s the most important thing….colleges seek DIVERSITY. So in your essay you have to get across to them how you will add to their diversity. Like if you are from the west coast and you apply to Texas, be sure to mention that in your essay about how your experiences on the west coast add blah blah blah element of diversity to your application portfolio. Good Luck. Oh-I forgot earlier, after you visit any of the schools, be sure to write them a thank you letter after visiting and send it to the kind people you met there. Nobody does this anymore. They will remember you.
