QUESTION
I am writing a persuasive essay and I need help. Is this a logical reason for the driving age to be raised?
I am arguing the pro side of why the driving age needs to be raised. Please do not comment on what you think, I would probably say it was a con since im almost ready to get my license but whatever. I just picked it because its so easy to argue. I need at least three reasons why it should be raised I so far have, crashing, not able to pay, drinking and driving, and so many more but I was wondering if this was a logical reason or does it sound a little far fetched: The driving age should be raised because teenagers may take advantage of having a car and/or license and sneak off at night to cause trouble. What do you think? I wasn’t sure if that would be a good reason. Please comment on that and tell me any other reasons. Thanks!

ANSWER
If I were debating the “con” side of that issue, I’d respond by saying that the sort of teenager who is going to use a car to cause trouble is also the sort of teenager who is likely to drive without a license at all.

I think a good “pro” argument would be that 16- and 17-year olds do not really appreciate the dangers inherent in driving a car because they lack enough life experience to really see what’s at risk behind the wheel — and to relate that risk to their own behavior. Like the previous commenter said, teenagers simply don’t think things through as much as adults do. Now, nothing magical happens to your brain or your level of maturity on the day you turn 18, but presumably you’ll have acquired two more years of maturity to help you appreciate that the car is a deadly weapon, that you don’t need to behave like a NASCAR champion at all times, and that you are at all times very much at risk from other irresponsible drivers no matter what happens.
