QUESTION
I have a short essay due, and it has to be 250-300 words, mine is almost 400…?
my question is, there is nothing that says I will be penalized if it is to long, but do you think i will be? and do instructors count all the words? Such as all the little words like,,, a, it, the, and? I have not been in school for 11 years so I am not sure.. thanks for any advice..

ANSWER
Those little words do count but I think you will be Ok otherwise. The main reason instructors state 250-300 words is to get those folks that would ordinarily turn in 35 to 50 words to do some work and research and some actual writing. As long as what you wrote isn’t full of “fluff” to get it over 300 you will be fine. Like I said, that rule is for the under achievers and if you go over it’s ok. I once turned in a 248 page paper for my final in college though and that got my professor riled even though I asked him many times how well we had to cover the five major topics of the paper. Still got an “A” and passed with a 4.0 GPA but I figured he had a PHD, he could read every stinkin word I wrote for the money they were paying him 🙂
