If you’ve never written an essay before, you might want to take something like our “Essay Writing Tips” for a start. These tips will provide you with some ideas for writing a piece that will get a lot of attention from your professors and classmates.
3. Don’t do this: Your first draft is crap.
When it comes to writing a paper, a first draft is generally not what it seems. A lot of people see a good first draft as a sign that you’re on your way to being a good writer, but an essay can be the ultimate learning experience.
Your first draft is where you develop ideas into sentences that will make it to a second draft when it’s time to revise, rewrite, and improve.
Doing this can require lots of work, and if you’re not clear on what to do and who you’re working with, your first draft will probably make you waste a lot of time.
If you don’t know who you’re working with or where to start, it doesn’t matter how polished your draft is—the first draft always looks like crap.
4. Don’t do this: Just write what you know.
If you think you know what to write about, ask someone for feedback to make sure.
Ask your classmates who you’re expecting to read your essay before writing it. Ask them questions on the Internet about the content so they’ll know you’re doing your homework. Ask them whether you should write something specific or if you should leave it at the summary.
Don’t just write what you know because you think it works. This is a trap many people fall into, and they end up wasting a lot of time before they finish the essay.
Writing an essay isn’t a matter that you can know at the tip of your pen and go from there.
Research the content thoroughly to know what to write about and why. Research the point behind writing the essay as well. You should know what the essay is trying to express, and why.
If you know all of the information, you won’t need to write your essay by yourself, so don’t make this your first instinct.
The best essay advice I’ve ever read is by Christopher Gardner. He was writing for his college class, and said:A major new study by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and the University of California at San Francisco found that in the U.S., the suicide rate is nearly 40 percent higher for transgender people than the general population. The study, which is published this week in the American Journal of Public Health, suggests that suicide ideation, not gender identity, is the key factor in these disparities.
“Many transgender people will not seek help for fear of being told they have mental illness, which in turn can lead to barriers to health care and further discrimination,” wrote lead investigator Rachel K. Anderson, assistant professor of Health Policy, Planning and Administration at the Mailman School. “This barrier may be heightened by the widespread understanding that being transgender is a mental illness, something that has no place in modern medicine.”
Anderson and her co-authors studied data from the 2008-2009 National Transgender Discrimination Survey, which included interviews with 1,600 transgender people in the U.S. The study relied on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2011 National Health Interview Survey to identify transgender respondents who
