In a 45 minute exam, how long should an essay be?
I have 45 minutes to write an essay, and I’m unsure of how much in terms of words/pages my teacher will be expecting.
What do you think would be an appropriate length?
It really depends on the topic. Some topics are more straightforward than others, while some necessitate in depth discussion. During my in class essays this year, I have written between 1.5-3 pages. Length doesn’t decide the grade. I’ve received A’s on some shorter writings and B’s on longer ones. I would recommend trying to keep your essay to around two pages (front and back of one page). To make sure that your writing flows rather than drags on, jot down the topics of each paragraph and 2 possible examples in each paragraph for about 2-3 minutes. You won’t lose much time and you’ll become much more organized. Finally, during in class essays, teachers will judge the writing as a 1st rough draft. So don’t focus on the introduction and conclusion so much at first; for the intro write 1-2 sentences explicitly stating you thesis, and for the conclusion do anything besides restating your thesis. It’s better to leave out a conclusion if your unsure how to do one, just make sure that your language in the final sentence of the last body paragraph indicates that your essay is ending. Anyway, good luck on your essay. It may be tough at first, but after writing them a few times, you’ll be able to master the art of speed essay writing.
