Enterprise is in orbit of a planet orbiting an unknown star. Seven of Nine is about to beamed up, when the captain turns down her offer to meet her. Seven wants to make a delivery to a Ferengi named R’Aunty, whom the crew is eager to meet, but it will take a while after the runabout is out of range. When Seven reaches out and places her hand on the ready room’s door handle, it swings open, revealing R’Aunty with a large Ferengi woman.
This is the first time that R’Aunty has been on a Federation starship. R’Aunty is eager to share the results of her Ferenginar education, and her enthusiasm is contagious as the crew is eager to learn from her. Seven asks R’Aunty if she has any children, to which she responds, “Not yet. One more child and I would take on all three genders…but…we would be very old.” She explains that there was a time back in her day when it was common practice for women to have three children, three genders, and three sizes. When Seven asks if they were happy for their children, R’Aunty responds by smiling and saying that they were. She describes one occasion when her son wanted to be an android like all his brothers, but the Ferengi government had outlawed the practice, leaving R’Aunty in a tight spot. Her last child was a girl, and as her biological son did not appear to be a fan of the Ferengi ways, the crew members are curious. R’Aunty talks about how her eldest, a son of the Empress of Ferenginar, was a “hater” and hated all of his sisters, as he believed that they were all corrupt in one way or another. Her fifth child was of a different color. She explains that the first born looked like a boy, but then her second child didn’t look like either a boy or a girl by the time they reached the age of nine. She mentions that it was only a matter of time before everyone figured it out.
After learning that Seven was a Federation officer, R’Aunty explains to the crew (while the Ferengi woman is still chatting with her) that the Starfleet Academy doesn’t accept female officers until they turn eighteen. She also says that the fact that Seven is a female, who is in command of her ship, is the ultimate insult and that she would much rather die in her own ship than in another’s. When Seven asks why she would want to be in Starfleet, not a Ferengi ship, R’Aunty explains that the crew of their mother ship
