Is International Relations a good major to work in an embassy?

QUESTION
Is International Relations a good major to work in an embassy?
I am a girl, 19. I want to study IR but i wish I can speak to someone who has majored in it too..
I am actually going to study it in a very good university in my country.
I loooove to read books, i have 2 nationalities (Australian and Lebanese), i speak/write/read 3 languages ( French, English and Arabic).
What really scares me is how hard/easy it is to find a job.
my second option of major is English Literature..
Please advise me.
Thank you xx

ANSWER
International Relations is a good choice, but what is essential is critical thinking and perfect (not merely “pretty good”) grammar and construction. Having Arabic in your arsenal is a plus, though that might limit your options once you get in the foreign service. English literature is good for social things, but won’t help much unless you learn critical thinking to write your essays. Writing is the most important skill. Think about Strunk and White’s “Elements of Style.” Having dual citizenship may/may not help. Before anyone trusts you with state secrets, you’ll have to convince them that you have undivided allegiance. A lot depends on your personal history. Take care!!
