How thick is the ice on Lake Temagami?
8 to 10 inches
Thickness can vary so it doesn’t hurt to check it often if you are on unfamiliar ice or if nobody else is out on it. Here in the bay in front of the lodge, it varies from 8 to 10 inches now and it is all solid clear ice. Snow depths can vary but there’s about 6 inches everywhere on it also.

How do Temagami Backcountry Park Permits work? There is no reservation system, per se. When you buy your permit, you are purchasing a registration, not a reservation. You are not able to reserve an individual campsite or even an individual lake.

The Marten River has public access just south of Temagami and is well known for Walleye, Pike and Smallmouth Bass fishing. There are wide and deep areas of the river, which hold Lake Trout. Cassells Lake and Kanichi Lake also have excellent fishing for multiple species.

There’s also an OPP office to maintain order on the waters. Islanders and visitors can be as isolated or connected as they choose. As cell phone coverage is spotty in the area, there is an underwater telephone cable to a number of the islands.

Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is no way to know in advance how many people may be on a particular lake at any given time. Select Backcountry Registration from the options (far right tab). Select Temagami from the dropdown list of parks.
