It often means to write up something more along the lines of a book report, or in this case an Anecdotal Story. If your lab is new or at least it hasn’t been around that long (and you’ve never seen any of the people, and that could change on a whim, which can happen), you might want to get some practice writing Anecdotal Stories ahead of time.

What is an Anecdotal Story?
An “anecdotal” story is basically a personal story that goes against the grain of what you believe or expect to find out in your experiments, even though it may not be necessarily wrong. As a rule of thumb, an “anecdotal” story is an account of the results you want to have come out, not the ones you do have.
These are the types of things that happen to you in the real world, people do things, and that’s just how it goes. Sometimes it might make sense to include an “anecdotal” story about something you did the other day to help give context to your current study, but more often than not, it makes sense to think of “anecdotal stories” as a separate and self-contained project, just like any lab report.
Let’s Get Started
So how do we do this? We start by figuring out who this person is, what makes them interesting, and how we’d like to write them. Then we gather up the materials, do some research online about that person, and go write! Here’s what you’ll need to know to write your first story:
A lot of what you need to write a story is research you’ve done yourself or done with others. There are some things you’ll want to avoid doing, like sharing a personal experience or doing anything too dramatic – that doesn’t need to be that way!
This is really just a starting place – there are hundreds of different ways to write a story, so you’ll have to come up with what works best for you. That’s OK, and the process is quite exciting and fun, just be sure to make sure you’re not leaving something out that you’ll have to come back and fix later on.
Keep in mind that if your lab happens to be an actual human, then it may get a little harder – we’re all pretty good at doing what we do, but we can be kind of selfish. Make sure to keep the empathy in.In the early evening of March 18, 2010, with a few hours still to go before President Barack Obama and the entire U.S. government would close its doors for good, three top State Department officials decided to send a very personal letter to the president in his bedroom at the White House. They didn’t care that Obama had just been sworn in that evening, and were writing to express their dismay at the prospect of their boss, John F. Kerry, going up against him in the presidential race.
There was one other thing: The officials — then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Undersecretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jeffrey Feltman — had found a way for Obama to receive that letter after the fact, without it ever being visible to anyone outside of the room where the letter was written.
