I change 30 to 35 percent of aquarium water with fresh water after scrubbing the aquarium glass.
It is very easy to clean media to keep filter running efficiently.
If your mechanical filtration media is clogged&dirty then it reduces its efficiency.
I usually half fill my bucket with tank water&rinse all the biological media in it.
