question about reflective essays.?
what is a reflective essay? how do you write one? and any other information you have.
ugh. I’m writing one of those right now and it’s actually more difficult than I thought it would be. One of the best ways to get started writing one would be to do some journaling for about a week. (I also have a whole list of pre-writing excercises I’ll let you borrow if you want to email me for them.) After a bit of this, you could look back at what you’ve written and see what seems to really be going on in your life. You could write about a friend who died from cancer and how it changed your life; you could write about the time you almost drowned. A friend of mine’s daughter is having a baby, and so she is using the connection to write about the first time SHE was pregnant–and that’s a good reflection.
You’re basically using the present to look back into the past.
My moment of brilliance occured while I was actually journaling a few days ago. I was sitting in a comfy chair, babbling on about random stuff, including how much I love the chair I was in. That reminded me of the first chair I remember ever being read to in, and so now I’m making a sort of “reading-chair chronicles” that connects the dots between all these places that I’ve read in, and how it led me to where I am now.
But you see how the most insignificant scribbling in your journal can lead to “aha” moments in your writing? Look at where you are now, and some of the things that are going on. Then reflect on the past and find a way to connect the two.
That’s about the best way I know how to explain it. I’ve been fighting with a “reflection essay” for a month now lol
