Anxiety over the decline of white Christian supremacy is a common enough phenomenon among American youth. With the proliferation of secularism, some have called for an “epidemic of anxiety” among Americans, especially minorities, over the decline of white privilege in society.1 The concern of youth, like their elders, is not limited to the erosion (or restoration) of the white male role in society and politics; there are other manifestations of white privilege.2 Although many youth worry about the loss of white American privilege, they tend to look beyond the issue of race to other forms of privilege. In this article I focus on white privilege within the context of public high school education.
Public Schools in America are segregated, not in the sense of color, but in the sense of ethnic segregation. Ethnic segregation, or “diversity,” typically has three components: (a) students of a particular “race” are generally separated from students of other races; and (b) students of the same race attend different schools than students of other races.3 The effect of diversity in public schools is to create differences between the races in the ability or potential to learn. This separation occurs largely through the provision of opportunities and resources that are inaccessible to students of other racial groups.4 Some of the disadvantages of being separated by one’s racial group can, however, have more profound effects. For example, because of the racial segregation of public schools, certain minority students are often confined to the minority group, and often are deprived of access to higher education, which might provide them with greater opportunities than their peers who are not disadvantaged by racial segregation. 5 These disadvantages can be most clearly seen in the decline of white children’s test scores on tests administered to them during high school.
White Privilege in Public Schools
Although there is a long history of white racism in America, particularly, during slavery and Jim Crow, there has also been a long history of discrimination in schools for white students.
