What exactly is the essence of mind and body for Descartes?

QUESTION
What exactly is the essence of mind and body for Descartes?
If someone can please define what the essence of mind and body means. This is for an essay for philosophy. Thank You.

ANSWER
Thought. The ability to think. He believes that everything can be refuted- for example that the body isn’t really as it seems because the senses can deceive us as it- for example they can tell us we something but it is actually an illusion and not there at all- (empiricism) but that the only thing you cannot refute is the fact that you think. He says that even if you can be sure that what you are thinking is correct, you cannot take away the fact that you are thinking.
He defines us as thinking beings.
