What is the best minimum GPA and SAT score to get into University of Texas at Austin?

QUESTION
What is the best minimum GPA and SAT score to get into University of Texas at Austin?
I really want to get into UTA. What are my best options? What GPA and SAT scores do I need?

ANSWER
If you’re a student at an accredited Texas high school, you can gain automatic acceptance to UT by being in the top 8% of your high school class (UT considers class rank, not GPA). However, being in the top 8% does not guarantee you’ll get into the program of your choice (i.e. business, architecture, and engineering all require significantly higher statistics to get into). If you’re an out-of-state student (or a non top 8% Texas high school student), then admission is more difficult. The average SAT is around 1900 (29 ACT) for these students; again, even if you’re admitted to the university, you’re not guaranteed admission to the specific school you want to major in.

My best advice is to take many rigorous courses in high school (ex. AP/IB/honors courses) and to prepare for the SAT/ACT. Admissions also factors in the strength of your essays, activities/leadership, and recommendations if you’re not in the top 8% for a Texas or out-of-state student.

Best of luck!
