QUESTION
What pattern of organization is suitable for a literary essay? PLEEZ help?
Hi, I have an assignment on writing a literary essay that analyzes how a character of a short story changes and (I’m suppose to analyze how characterization is used in the story too) and I have no clue what pattern of organization I should use. Please tell me what pattern of organization is normally used for a literary essay!!!!!! Thank you….Crap from highschool I don’t wanna even do

ANSWER
There are two styles of literary analysis papers.

The most common is the thesis-driven paper, which is structured around a central thesis or argument about a text you introduce at the beginning of the paper.

In a process paper, you explore how you’re processing a piece of text and arrive at a thesis or argument by the paper’s conclusion. This second approach is really about exploring and interacting with a text. Ask your instructor which approach she prefers or which best suits where you’d like to go with the paper.

For your purpose [of analyzing characters in the book/essay, etc], the first approach – thesis-driven style would be more appropriate, since you already have a theme [to discuss characters].

Take notes and always keep track of your sources in MLA or APA format.

Good luck!
