What temp is too high for EGT?
The absolute maximum safe EGT range is debatable. Our universal rule of thumb, regardless of engine make/model/year, is to not exceed 1250° F and not to operate in the 1200° F – 1250° F range for an extended period of time.
What EGT temp is safe?

If everything is working properly, 1250º to 1300º F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300º F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
What are normal EGT levels?
Premium Member. A little high but that is typical for the emissions engines. Ideally with a low load percentage 600-700 would be about right. 75 mph in these trucks is introducing an aerodynamic load so the EGT’s will rise a bit.
What should EGT be at idle?
If the truck is a manual and the ambient weather is above freezing then idle EGT’s will be around 250-300* depending on how long its been idling. The longer it idles the cooler it will get, but no cooler than around 250* if the engine is at full operating temperature unless its VERY cold outside.
How do I lower my EGT temperature?
Installing aftermarket parts to help regulate exhaust gas temperatures will extend the life of the motor and assist with increased performance.
- Provide additional airflow to the motor by installing an aftermarket, cool air intake in place of the stock air filter.
- Install a free-flowing, large diameter exhaust system.
How do I get my EGT down?
Upgrade the Intercooler and exhaust manifold. That right there will drop more than 200° upgrading the turbo would lower the EGT’s but without more aggressive tuning and some larger injectors will cause turbo lag. Get the ol girl flowing more air and the stock turbo will be happier.
What should my pyrometer gauge read?
A pyrometer measures the temperature of the engine through its exhaust fumes. A probe is placed within the flow of exhaust air to receive the best gauge of how hot the engine fumes are becoming. Normal operating ranges are from 300 degrees to 1200 degrees. Any fluctuations from this range can damage the engine.
Will a bigger intercooler lower EGT?
Adding an intercooler to an engine without one will simply cool the intake charge, provide more oxygen to the cylinder, and will also lower EGTs.
