When should a cylinder be replated?
The cylinder bores are plated with nicasil which is a chrome like plating from the factory. When one is damaged due to a piston seizure or other damaging event they can be replated to restore them to like new specs.

Is honing a cylinder necessary?
More often than not, you will need to hone your cylinder when replacing the piston rings. That is because honing creates small crosshatches in the surface of the cylinder, to allow the wall of the component to retain oil and provide lubrication for the piston ring.

How do I know if my cylinder is Nikasil?
Look at the top of the cylinder. If it’s a sleeved, it’s obvious. The steel sleeve is about 3/8 of an inch thick. The magnet method will work too.
Can new rings without honing?
Yes new rings require a hone. As hungry718 pointed out, your cylinder walls are glazed and wont seat new rings properly. You need a honed crosshatch so the parts wear into each other slightly creating a good ring seal.
Do I need bigger pistons after honing?
Usually “honing” on a plated cylinder just cleans out the gunk and makes it rough enough to seat a new set of rings. However if it was a sleeved cylinder that’s a different story, and honing can take away enough material to require an over sized piston.
