ANSWER
Addiction is tricky. A lot of people start using drugs out of recreation, quick high, fun, but end up needing it to get by. There are typically emotional factors (insecurity, depression, need for escape) that are behind why people start a drug. Sometimes the drug may feel like a reward and thus people reward themselves after a hard day with something to relax. Sometimes its the idea in the back of ones head that the drug will always be there to get them through their loneliness, poverty, emptiness, lack of purpose/love, stress, demands, and fears that brings comfort. When writing your essay take into account that all types of people struggle with addictions. From the richest and most adored celebrities to the mothers on the streets. When you start feeling like you need the drug to get you through life then its no longer about the quick high, but about survival. In reality its a steady suicide.
