Why do some people, who are “different” from others, alienate themselves from society?

QUESTION
Why do some people, who are “different” from others, alienate themselves from society?
for example, some people who are gay or lesbian, try not to show it to others. what makes them like this?
i need ideas for my essay

ANSWER
hmm i fink it comes down to ppl feeling comfortable around others wen they have things in common esp when this is a big part of who they are.
for example i dont drink cuz of my religion and culturally it is common amongst asians not to drink…so i feel like i can go out clubbing with other asians for fun and nt have the pressure to drink even if some of them are drinkin…..
however if i went out clubbing with my english mates den it kindah becomes different cuz it means i have to explain to each one why i dont drink…wot r my reasons and y i stick to it…i guess it is a really gud thing to explain to them but sometimes u cant b bothered and u jus wanna have an easy nite out an nt feel self-consicious…ie.do they think am stupid.
also my parents r pretty cntrolling and dont let me go out much, whilst my english mates r out every wkend…i feel that my asian mates knw the score whereas my english mates even when they have known me for ova 10yrs will pester me to go out.
overall i think ppl alienate themselves jus to make dere life easier, cuz they dont have to justify themselves to everybody who dont understand or come from the same society.
