why was music used in ancient Greek culture?

QUESTION
why was music used in ancient Greek culture?
Can someone give me at least 3 reasons why music is used in ancient greek culture? I need to write an essay about it and obviously am having a hard time. Who used them? What for? why is it important? Impact on life? HELP!

ANSWER
Hello,

Music in ancient Greece served many of the same purposes it does today. Lyre’s and other stringed instruments were often used as background music during meals, or the host/guest may have entertained each other. Another use was during religious ceremonies – certain repetitive beats have nearly hypnotic qualities (if you really want to get into some interesting stuff check out the Dionysian Rites/Mysteries – and not just what Wikipedia has to say). It also played a role in the theater.
