Is labour induction painful?
Induced labour is usually more painful than natural labour. Depending on the type of induction you are having, this could range from discomfort with the procedure or more intense and longer lasting contractions as a result of the medication you have been given.
How do you induce Labour?
There are several ways to induce labour.
- Medicine may be used to make the cervix soft and help it thin.
- Medicine may be used to cause the uterus to contract.
- A balloon catheter may be used to help the cervix open.
- Your doctor may sweep the membranes or break the amniotic sac to start or increase labour.
How long is labour after induction?
The time it takes to go into labor after being induced varies and can take anywhere between a few hours up to 2-3 days. In most healthy pregnancies, labor usually starts spontaneously between 37 and 42 weeks of pregnancy.
Is inducing labor safe?
Generally, inducing labor is safe, but there are risks: Longer hospital stay. If you’re induced, you may be in the hospital longer during labor and delivery. If you wind up needing a C-section after induction, your time in the hospital will be even longer.

Here’s a list of some foods that are purported to get labor going:
- Pineapple. There’s nothing quite as sweet as fresh pineapple.
- Dates. The fruit of the date palm tree, dates are very nutritious.
- Spicy food.
- Prego pizza.
- Maternity salad.
- The “Inducer” pizza.
- Eggplant.
- Cupcakes.
Why is induced Labour more painful?
As oxytocin levels increase, more endorphins are released. When labour is induced, the artificial oxytocin used to stimulate contractions does not cross the blood-brain barrier. Your body doesn’t receive signals to release the endorphins and you experience more intense pain.
Is it better to be induced or wait?
For some women, inducing labor is the best way to keep mom and baby healthy. If there are medical reasons to schedule induction, talk to your provider about waiting until at least 39 weeks of pregnancy. This gives your baby the time she needs to grow and develop before birth.
